While it’s true that today’s highly efficient air conditioning systems out-perform those made just a few years ago, you should always make the most of your present system to delay the need for replacement. If your home’s air conditioning system is still reliable, you can improve existing AC efficiency and extend your system’s life for many years. Here are some handy tips to help Asheville homeowners maximize energy savings this summer:
Dial Back the AC and Still Stay Cool
- Close window shades, doors and windows to keep conditioned air inside–and warm air and direct sunlight out.
- Set your thermostat to higher temperatures when you’re away from home or install a programmable thermostat.
- Cool the rooms you’re using only, which is easiest if you have a zoning system. Don’t close off all registers, however, because you must maintain some airflow.
- Use ceiling fans and you can raise the thermostat without feeling any warmer. Try it at 79 degrees.
- Control humidity by using exhaust fans above the stove and in the bathroom.
- Do laundry and use the dishwasher during the evening.
Change Your Air Filter Often and Clear Debris
- Your air conditioner performs best when you replace the air filter monthly or thoroughly clean replaceable filters. Clogged filters make air conditioners work too hard, waste energy and wear out sooner.
- Clean the outside AC component; removing debris, lawn clippings and trapped leaves. Clear an area of 2 feet around the unit.
Get Professional Preventative Maintenance
- Have an AC system checkup. Your local HVAC contractor should inspect, clean and oil your cooling system every year.
- Have ducts inspected. If leaks are found, the system should be sealed. As Energy Star’s website states, homeowners can improve cooling (and heating) system efficiency by 20 percent, and even more, with duct insulation and sealing.
With simple, cost-effective maintenance, your air conditioner will serve you well for many years.
