Winter is about to arrive in full force and that means you’re likely to feel a little less enthusiastic and a little more lethargic. These are the symptoms of the wintertime blues, and many of us go through them to some extent. Fortunately, combating winter blues is as simple as doing the following:

  • Turn the lights down early. About half an hour before bed, dim the lights a bit. This will calm you down and ease you into sleep easier. The better rested you are, the happier you’ll be.
  • Open the drapes. The more sunlight you allow into your home, the cheerier it will feel. It’s a simple trick that works wonders for your mood. If it’s dark and gloomy outside, open the blinds or turn the lights on.
  • Get active. Exercise gets endorphins going, which makes us feel happy. Whether you do yoga, tai chi or simply run on the treadmill, the exercise will get the blood flowing and pep you right up.
  • Watch your cravings. Go ahead and indulge some, but don’t overdo it. Some chocolate or a glass of wine can work wonders on your attitude.
  • Go outside. Whether you ski, sled or make a snow fort, embrace the winter weather in whatever way possible. As long as you have some hot cocoa to come back in to, you’ll have a marvelous time.
  • Check your home’s HVAC system. From changing the air filter to having the furnace professionally inspected, it’s the one thing in your home you don’t want to break this winter. Make sure everything is in tip top condition so you don’t have to worry about feeling chilly when it goes on the fritz.
  • Upgrade the thermostat. Nothing saps a mood more than an outrageous utility bill. A programmable thermostat allows a homeowner to control the temperature more evenly, which will trim utility bills in time for Christmas.
