4 Ways to Prevent a Frozen Air Conditioner

frozen air conditioner

In the middle of an Asheville, NC summer, there’s nothing worse than coming home to a warm house. If your home isn’t feeling as nice and cool as it should, the problem could be that your air conditioner is frozen. Fortunately, there are some simple ways to prevent your unit from freezing.

Watch the Outdoor Unit

One of the most effective ways to keep your air conditioner from freezing is to keep your eyes on the outdoor unit. Problems within the outdoor portion of your HVAC system can cause the system to stop working properly. Accumulation of dirt or debris over the coils can affect how the refrigerant works and cause ice formation. Notify your HVAC technician right away if the outdoor unit isn’t performing as it should.

Change the Air Filters

Another simple way to make sure your air conditioner doesn’t freeze is to change the air filters. To keep your air conditioner running efficiently change the filter as needed. If you have reusable filters you should clean them with soap and water regularly.

Pick the Right Unit Size

If you have a window air conditioner unit it’s important to make sure you pick out the correct unit size for the room. If the air conditioner is too small, it will constantly have to run to cool down a room. This can cause condensation to accumulate, which can turn to ice. On the other hand, if an air conditioner is too big for the room, it won’t run enough and ice can also again form on the vents.

The Indoor Coil

As you’re changing the air filters or cleaning the unit, you may notice that the evaporator coils are dirty. While it’s possible to vacuum out some of the dirt and debris, you’ll have to call a Gentry Service Group professional at (828) 581-4045 to have the coils themselves cleaned. While cleaning the coils, your HVAC professional will also check the fluid levels in your unit and refill the coolant. To make sure your home is always cool and comfortable, schedule annual maintenance so your system is kept clean and functional and so you avoid problems such as ice accumulation.
